I put this little outfit together yesterday.

I was off to indulge in a leisurely lunch and a slow stroll through Newtown, with the high probability of doing a spot of shopping as well.

The shirt was really hard to photograph, because it’s just so busy with flowers, leaves, swirls, and dots all over it, and while the photograph wasn’t taken with a potato, it was just a standard camera, so it came out a little blurry.

It did look good though.

To strengthen that belief, as I was feeding the parking meter, a woman stopped to comment on what a nice shirt it was and to ask where I bought it.

There was that moment that flashed through my head to tell her a complete lie, so I could minimise the chance of seeing anyone wearing the same shirt, but of course, the whole blog writing thing pretty much screws that idea up.

A second woman then gave me a passing compliment, smiling at me as we passed each other, and saying “Great outfit.”

I started to get a little paranoid when a third person, a shop assistant, commented on how great I looked. I looked at him strangely, thanked him for the compliment, and moved on.

Was somebody playing a joke on me? Normally I’m quite open to taking a compliment, but this was just too weird.

I mean I know I looked good, but I wouldn’t exactly put the outfit in my top three visually spectacular list.

When the fourth person, another shop assistant, commented, I actually looked around, then replied “Thank you, but seriously, you’re the fourth person that’s said that in the last couple of hours. What’s so good about it?”

I don’t think I was aggressive about it, but I just had to know.

She replied that the shirt worked really well with the jeans and shoes, especially the red, and it just looked really good.

Far be it from me to stand in the way of a little admiration, I accepted her explanation, thanked her again and walked out of the store, perhaps a few inches taller and definitely with a larger head.

I finished the day on a definite high. There’s nothing like appreciative comments from complete strangers to brighten your day, let me tell you.

I still look at the photo and can’t see the reason for such enthused appreciation, and you would think that without the head, it would make the outfit even better.

What do you see, occasional reader?

Are you under, over, or just the right amount of whelmed?
